Jared Leto Invests in Generative AI Video Startup Captions.
Jared Leto is stepping into the generative artificial intelligence (AI) arena with a strategic investment in Captions, a startup pioneering AI technology in video creation and editing. The actor and musician is participating in Captions' Series C funding round, which raised $60 million and valued the company at $500 million. This round includes significant contributions from venture capital giants Andreessen Horowitz, Index Ventures, Kleiner Perkins, Sequoia Capital, and Adobe.
Captions, which has now accumulated $100 million in total funding, announced this latest investment on Tuesday. The startup specializes in developing AI tools for video content, particularly focusing on videos where individuals speak directly to the camera. Its current suite of tools includes AI Creator, AI Edit, and Lipdub. Despite its early stages, Captions is generating significant interest in Hollywood and Silicon Valley, alongside established AI players like OpenAI and Anthropic, and niche startups such as Runway ML.
Leto's involvement in the AI sector isn't new. Just last month, he invested in Pika, another generative AI startup, which his band, Thirty Seconds to Mars, has explored using for music video production.
Gaurav Misra, co-founder and CEO of Captions, expressed enthusiasm about the company's growth and its New York base. “We believe that New York is quickly emerging as the epicenter for AI, and look forward to expanding our team here and furthering our mission of democratizing video creation, so that anyone can effectively share their stories or ideas,” Misra stated. “We're grateful for the continued support from our investors and community, and excited for our next chapter.”
Damir Becirovic, a partner at Index Ventures, highlighted the transformative potential of Captions' technology. “Storytelling is humanity's most powerful trait. Captions is enabling a higher dimension of storytelling via their AI-enabled video creation product. The company allows anyone to bring their stories to life in ways that were previously unimaginable and to truly share them with the whole world. The result will be a huge wave of incredible stories that are imagined and directed by Captions users.”
With this substantial investment, Captions is poised to expand its innovative offerings and make significant strides in the AI video generation industry.
