Cuckoo is attracting a lot of attention mainly due to its ensemble cast. On to the plot then. The film follows 17-year-old Gretchen, who moves to the German Alps with her father who has started a new family. Here, she encounters a bunch of weird happenings, leading to a discovery that involves her own family. Variety spoiled us with a little more. They revealed that the story unveils a horrifying bird-like monster on a terrifying mission, inspired by the lore of the cuckoo bird. How’s that for a plot twist?
Dan Stevens’ performance in the film deserves a special mention. He delivers what has been described as a “brilliant and terrifying” performance. In truth, we are biting our nails in anticipation!
Cuckoo isn’t Singer’s only tryst with horror. He delivered a supernatural horror flick in 2018 named Luz, a story about a young cab driver evading a possessed woman. Remember Jan Bluthardt from Tatort? He was in Luz too. Singer has also brought some of his Luz team back for Cuckoo like cinematographer Paul Faltz, composer Simon Waskow, and production designer Dario Mendez Acosta.
The movers and shakers backing the film financially include Neon, along with producers Markus Halberschmidt, Josh Rosenbaum, Maria Tsigka, Ken Kao, Thor Bradwell, Ben Rimmer. They are working in sync with Germany’s Fiction Park and the States’ Waypoint Entertainment. Also, on board are executive producers Tom Quinn, Jeff Deutchman, Emily Thomas, and Ryan Friscia for Neon. Additional funding has come from the Film und Medien Stiftung NRW, HessenFilm, and the German Federal Film Fund.
