Ever since the success of the ever-iconic T2: Judgment Day, the Terminator franchise has faced mixed reviews. Between the thrilling crane chase in Terminator 3, to the less stellar performances of Salvation and Genysis, the series struggled with maintaining its initial hype. However, a glimmer of hope emerged with the release of Dark Fate. This installment saw the reunion of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton, a return that stirred hope among the franchise’s loyal fans.

The Terminator’s Original Verdict

As the creator of the original Terminator movie, James Cameron expressed his thoughts on Dark Fate on its 40th anniversary. Known for his critical eye, Cameron applauded Dark Fate for being “cracking.” He did point out, however, that it failed to parallel the impressive impact created by the first two films. Despite this, Cameron confidently declared Dark Fate as the third best in the series.

Cameron’s Candid Confession

Yet, Dark Fate faced hurdles, some of which were possibly unanticipated. Cameron, who served as a producer on the project, noted that the film did face its share of difficulties. He tossed out a rather sobering notion and said that the film failed to attract a new audience. With the original fanbase growing older, Dark Fate’s potential success was shaky from the start. The film’s struggle to connect with a new generation became evident through its lackluster box office performance.

Taking Ownership of Missteps

Interestingly, Cameron pointed out that the film’s weakest link wasn’t its content but its reception. In a frank admission, he revealed to director Tim Miller that he had unknowingly sabotaged the film even before it hit the shooting phase. He took ownership of this miscalculation, indicating the complexities in making films for long-established franchises.

Light at the End of the Tunnel

On a more positive note, the franchise found recent success with the launch of the anime series – Terminator Zero – on Netflix. Garnering wide acclaim, this series emerged as a breath of fresh air amid a somewhat floundering franchise. In addition, the 1984 classic ‘The Terminator’ received a revival with a 4K release, presenting its own set of discussions among fans and media alike.

Where Does Dark Fate Rank?

Despite its tribulations, Dark Fate stands fairly strong among the sequels. Sure, being preferable to Salvation and Genysis isn’t winning the Oscar, but it’s worth acknowledging. When released, critics appreciated the effort put into the film, bestowing it with a generous 9/10 rating.

So, what’s your say about Dark Fate? Do you concur with James Cameron’s views or do you perceive the film differently? Dive into the debate and let us know your ranking for this venturous addition to the iconic Terminator franchise. Do you think it stood up to its predecessors, or did it miss the mark entirely? The post-apocalyptic world of Terminator awaits your judgement.
