In a stunning victory, ‘Barbie‘ has outshone the caped crusader.
The latest triumph in its impressive box office journey took place on Tuesday, overtaking Christopher Nolan’s iconic film, ‘The Dark Knight,’ to become North America’s highest-grossing Warner Bros. movie. This accomplishment is not adjusted for inflation.
On that Tuesday, ‘Barbie’ raked in a substantial $6.1 million, boosting its domestic earnings to an impressive $537.4 million. In 2008, ‘The Dark Knight’ held the top spot with revenues of $536 million.
Drawing inspiration from the renowned Mattel doll, ‘Barbie’ has soared past the $1.2 billion mark in global box office earnings, solidifying its place as the second-highest-grossing release from Warner Bros. worldwide. It follows closely behind the ultimate wizarding finale, the last Harry Potter film, which amassed an impressive $1.34 billion globally (figures are not inflation-adjusted). Some optimistic experts even foresee ‘Barbie’ potentially surpassing the magical achievements of the young wizard.
The accomplishments don’t stop there. ‘Barbie’ has shattered several other prominent records. Greta Gerwig, the director behind the movie, has claimed the title of the highest-grossing female director at the domestic box office, whether considering individual or collaborative efforts. She managed to overtake the previous record held by ‘Frozen II.’ At the worldwide box office, Gerwig also reigns as the highest-grossing female director for a live-action film. This achievement involved surpassing the impressive $1.3 billion amassed by Marvel Studios’ 2019 superhero hit, ‘Captain Marvel,’ directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. (‘Frozen II’ achieved a worldwide gross of $1.43 billion.)
Interestingly, there’s a significant connection between ‘Barbie’ and Christopher Nolan. Gerwig’s film was released in competition with Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ during the July 21-23 weekend. Both blockbuster films played pivotal roles in rejuvenating the summer box office and reviving the joy of moviegoing.
In a remarkable turn of events, ‘Oppenheimer,’ produced by Universal, has exceeded all predictions. Its earnings have surged past $650 million and are still climbing. This three-hour biographical drama, centered around the father of the atomic bomb, now stands as Nolan’s fifth-highest-grossing film globally.
