According to reports, conversations are underway regarding a potential prequel of the beloved series “Game of Thrones” on Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros.
At this early juncture of the project, an author still needs to be assigned; however, sources report that HBO is actively searching for a suitable writer so they can move forward and begin development. Sources have hinted that a potential feature-length film might be involved in the project, with HBO and Warner Bros. serving as producers. This movie would then turn into an episodic television series; however, these plans are still subject to change now.
Aegon and his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, would vividly tell the account of their conquest to subdue six of the seven kingdoms in Westeros with military might and dragons – excluding Dorne. Aegon I made history by becoming the inaugural ruler of Westeros, taking reign over the Iron Throne, and establishing the Targaryen Dynasty – a legacy lasting approximately 300 years before its mention in “Game of Thrones.”
After the phenomenal success of “Game of Thrones” worldwide, HBO has decided to work on multiple projects inspired by George R.R Martin’s fictional realm of Westeros. This would be their latest endeavor in that direction.
Despite the slew of Game of Thrones spinoffs announced in recent years, only “House of the Dragon” has taken flight. In mere days following its initial launch in August 2022, Season 1 proved such a success that Season 2 was given immediate greenlight and is currently underway!
On the same day that “House of the Dragon” was officially given the go-ahead, it was also announced that filming for a different “Game of Thrones” project starring Naomi Watts had been scrapped. This pilot focused on The Long Night and would have been the first attempt at creating anything related to “Game of Thrones.” Unfortunately, this endeavor never saw fruition.
It isn’t shocking that the decision to broaden the “Game of Thrones” universe was made, as this show is one of Warner Bros. Discovery’s most valuable intellectual property investments. Crafting a movie could be an additional way to capitalize on its success and extend its reach even more! Legacy media companies have been striving to construct interwoven movie and television universes around their primary titles for years. Of course, Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe is the premier example of this effort. In addition to that success, Warner Bros has also made substantial strides in advancing this concept. With James Gunn and Peter Safran at the helm, Discovery is currently in the progress of a thrilling reboot of DC Universe.
