Ways to Nail an Audition for a Commercial Athletic Role

Be prepared to take direction. Commercials are often shot with a specific look and feel in mind, so the directors may have precise instructions for how they want you to perform. Listen carefully, practice what is being asked of you, and be willing to adjust your performance if necessary.

Make sure that you know the product or message of the commercial. Please familiarize yourself with any script lines so that you can hit them on cue without having to think about it too much. If props are involved with the shoot, ensure you understand how they should be used and handled while filming.

Work on developing natural facial expressions and body language. Acting coaches suggest studying various characters from different films to help you understand the other emotions and terms that may be called for in a particular commercial.

Stay positive and confident on set. It’s essential to project enthusiasm throughout your audition, even if it goes less smoothly than you would like. Showing confidence can help the director imagine how you’ll look on camera when they put together the commercial.

Be prepared to take feedback from the directors and other crew members gracefully. Don’t take criticism or direction personally; instead, use it to improve your performance and ensure that you’re delivering what is being asked of you. You may have to do multiple takes before the director is satisfied with your work, so stay focused and motivated until the end. Good luck!
