“So here’s the goss: it is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce GOSSIP GIRL will not be continuing on HBO Max,” showrunner Joshua Safran wrote Thursday on social media.
He continued, “We are currently looking for another home, but in this climate, that might prove an uphill [battle], and so if this is the end, at least we went out on the highest of highs. Thank you for watching, and I hope you’ll tune into the finale next Thursday to see how it all comes together.”
A representative for HBO Max shared a statement with Entertainment Weekly, expressing, “We are very grateful to Josh Safran, Stephanie Savage, and Josh Schwartz for bringing us back to the Upper East Side and all the scandals at Constance Billard. Although we are not moving forward with a third season of Gossip Girl, we thank them for the enticing love triangles, calculated backstabbing, and impeccable fashion this series brought to a new audience.”
From 2007 to 2012, the CW televised Gossip Girl — a hit show created by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage that followed all of the drama unfolding at an elite New York City prep school. It was entertaining and launched celebrities such as Blake Lively and Penn Badgley into stardom thanks to its riveting adaptions from Cecily von Ziegesar’s novel series.
In 2021, HBO Max unveiled the much-anticipated reboot of Safran’s Gossip Girl with Kristen Bell as narrator. While some elements were kept intact from its predecessor, there was a slight shakeup – instead of keeping Gossip Girl’s identity hidden. It was made known right away that teachers at an exclusive high school were responsible for all blogging activity.
Warner Bros. Discovery’s recent merger with WarnerMedia has had a surprise consequence: the cancellation of the beloved TV show Gossip Girl. Although season 2 is due to air its finale on HBO Max this coming January 26th, it might be the final episode ever released – and will leave fans wanting more!
