‘Black Panther’ Director Ryan Coogler Reveals Original ‘Black Panther 2’ Plans

Date:

Director Ryan Coogler reveals his original intention of ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever‘ story.

Before the heartbreaking passing of star Chadwick Boseman in 2016 due to a four-year battle with colon cancer, Ryan Coogler had shared his initial plans for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Recently, in an interview with The New York Times, Coogler discussed the original plan for Black Panther 2: to address Thanos’ Blip from Infinity War and Endgame as well as Spider-Man: Far From Home. For those unfamiliar, this event first occurred in 2018 when Thanos wiped out half of the population with a mere snap of his fingers—and then was reversed five years later.

“‘What are we going to do about the Blip?’ That was the challenge. It was nothing like what we made,” Coogler told the publication. “It was going to be a father-son story from the perspective of a father, because the first movie had been a father-son story from the perspective of the sons.”

Coogler shared that T’Challa (Boseman) and Nakia’s (Lupita Nyong’o) sequel would have included a child, one whom T’Challa had been absent from for five years due to the Blip. This would have led him to struggle with reconciling his newfound fatherly role and responsibilities.

“T’Challa was a dad who’d had this forced five-year absence from his son’s life,” Coogler shared. “The first scene was an animated sequence. You hear Nakia talking to [their son] Toussaint. She says, ‘Tell me what you know about your father.’ You realize that he doesn’t know his dad was the Black Panther.

“He’s never met him, and Nakia is remarried to a Haitian dude,” he continues. “Then, we cut to reality, and it’s the night that everybody comes back from the Blip. You see, T’Challa meets the kid for the first time.”

Coogler continued to explain that the story would be pushed forward three more years, with T’Challa and Nakia raising their children together.

“Then it cuts ahead three years, and he’s essentially co-parenting. We had some crazy scenes in there for Chad, man,” Coogler said. “Our code name for the movie was ‘Summer Break,’ and the movie was about a summer that the kid spends with his dad. For his eighth birthday, they do a ritual where they go out into the bush and have to live off the land.”

When a chaotic event occurred, T’Challa had no choice but to journey on an epic mission with his son to save the world.
