November 15, 2022, has been deemed the “Day of Eight Billion” by the United Nations. It is estimated that Earth will have eight billion residents on this day.

The Unite Nations population fund recently stated that the world’s population reached eight billion. This is a significant increase from the previous seven to eight billion, which took only 12 years. As the average human lifespan continues to get longer, the need for farmland, clean water, food, and other natural resources will continue to grow. Along with this increased responsibility comes an increased concern for endangered wildlife and carbon emissions.

The UN commented, “This unprecedented growth is due to the gradual increase in human lifespan owing to improvements in public health, nutrition, personal hygiene, and medicine. It is also the result of high and persistent fertility levels in some countries.”

As National Geographic points out, it took our ancestors 300,000 years to reach a population of one billion. However, in just 155 short years after that, the world’s population shot up to 3 billion. And then, in an unprecedented 63 years, we reached 8 billion people.

The UN has announced that the world population is projected to exceed 10 billion this century. They went on to say that the countries with the highest population growth rate are no longer China and India but have shifted to those located in Sub-Saharan Africa.
