Influencers may be compelled to seek attention by their work, but a new AI experiment shows that they aren’t always in command of their fans’ gazes. On social media, Belgian artist Dries Depooter unveiled The Follower, a project incorporating the AI surveillance video. It’s part of his project, The Follower, which he revealed on social media. In this way, it offers a peek into the terrifying potentials of automated monitoring. It feels like witnessing something private yet also shameless when individuals are caught unaware and unguarded. Depoorter analyzed public cameras’ feeds for material for his project, The Follower.

The new project, which will use open-access cameras and Instagram celebrities, will seem too real. Dries Depoorter is a Belgian artist who previously piqued our attention by monitoring political figures with smartphones at work. An artificial intelligence system that uses open-access video footage from security cameras located worldwide to identify individuals was created by Depoorter. However, The Follower arose due to boredom for Depoorter, who watched another person’s habits remotely from afar. Although we may not feel much sympathy for influencers seeking attention, anyone can be targeted by AI surveillance.

The Follower is a chilling art project that uses available cameras and artificial intelligence to follow Influencers and reveal how they created their Instagram photographs. Weeks of footage were recorded. He then scraped Instagram for photos tagged with the camera locations. After that, he crossed all Instagram pictures with the open cameras’ locations and used AI software to compare them to the recorded film.

The Belgian artist used software to focus on Instagram influencers with over 100,000 followers. They then matched these people to the film of their Instagram photos. The concept works by recording a selection of available cameras for weeks and using AI to scan through all Instagram photos tagged with locations corresponding to where the open camera recordings took place. By making this side-by-side comparison, possible shots are captured perfectly(and how much thought/time goes into bringing them).

Depoorter’s project, The Follower, initially seems to make fun of the mundanity behind picture-perfect Instagram posts. However, Depoorter has bigger aspirations than that; he wants to target the dangerous aspects of social media influencers. His project launched on September 12th, and he released his first video Monday with footage from only ten days worth of collecting videos. He could use AI video analysis to identify which scenes in the videos were taken by influences and show them publicly.

For weeks, Depoorter recorded video footage from open access cameras. He is an artist who tends to create installations, apps, and games that focus on privacy, artificial intelligence, surveillance & social media. Although his monitoring system might not seem as bad compared to what companies are already selling to governments, the most concerning part is being surveilled by these available cameras, which anyone can access.
