Saturday Night Live is Casting “At Least” Four New Cast Members

Date:

“At Least” Four New Cast Members Will Join Saturday Night Live For The 2022 Season After Many Big Names Left The Show This Year.

Saturday Night Live is an American late-night live television sketch comedy and variety show created by Lorne Michaels and developed by Dick Ebersol. The show premiered on NBC on October 11, 1975, under the original title NBC’s Saturday Night. The show’s comedy sketches parody contemporary culture and politics are performed by a large and varying cast of repertory and newer cast members. Each episode is hosted by a celebrity guest, who usually delivers the opening monologue and performs in sketches with the cast as with featured performances by a musical guest. An episode normally begins with a cold open sketch that ends with someone breaking character and proclaiming, “Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night!”, followed by the opening title sequence.

In 1980, Michaels left the series to explore other opportunities. He was replaced by Jean Doumanian, who Ebersol quickly replaced after a season of bad reviews. Ebersol ran the show until 1985 when Michaels returned; Michaels has remained since then. Many of SNL’s cast found national stardom while appearing on the show, and achieved success in film and television, both in front of and behind the camera. In 2012, it was reported that SNL had generated about $2 billion in revenue for NBC since 1975.

The show has received several awards, including 43 Primetime Emmy Awards, two Peabody Awards, and three Writers Guild of America Awards. As of 2014, it has received 156 Emmy nominations, the most received by any television program. In 2014, SNL received its first Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy. Of the show’s 124 seasons, it has been canceled twice, in 1980 after the end of its fifth season and in 1985 after the end of its tenth, but it has otherwise remained on the air since its debut. By early 2015, according to various reports, Saturday Night Live had become “the most honored show in television history”. In February 2015, NBC announced that Michaels would be producing again; he has held that title ever since.

Saturday Night Live features a two-tiered cast: the repertory members, also known as the Not Ready for Prime-Time Players, and newer cast members, who are known as featured players until they are promoted to repertory status.

The SNL cast is now casting four new people to join the cast. “There are four new people…at least for now,” Lorne Michaels, big boss and recipient of last night’s Emmy for Outstanding Variety Series (his sixth in a row), told the press per Entertainment Weekly.

While they may as well include the continuation of this run in Emmy bylaws at this point, the win is still largely due to the efforts of long-time cast members such as Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Pete Davidson, Kyle Mooney, Alex Moffat, and Melissa Villaseñor. They will all depart the show ahead of its upcoming 48th (!!!) season.

“This will be a transition year, and the change years are always difficult but also really exciting,” said Michaels of season 48. While the names of the lucky four have not yet been revealed, the creator continued to express his enthusiasm for the contributions of this “different generation.”

COVID-19 was the primary reason for so many big names leaving the show last season, Michaels explained. “I think people might’ve left earlier, but there was no place to go, and also, we were used to doing it, and we were under pressure to do it,” he said. “I think that there was just a bonding, and I think people got very close. When we did those at-home shows, you got to see everyone’s apartment and actually where they live and how they live. So there was an intimacy and a connection between the audience and this group. I couldn’t imagine leaving work without that whole team, so we just kept going.”

Season 48 premieres on October 1st.
