While many may be inclined to Netflix's planned ad-supported subscription tier owing to its reportedly lower price, it now appears that it has more limitations than the company has previously stated. According To a new report from Bloomberg, software developer Steve Moser discovered hidden code within the Netflix iPhone app that seemingly disables users from downloading programs and movies for offline viewing.
Limiting the capability could be a deal-breaker for some new consumers, especially when you want to watch something when there's no signal, such as during flights or in specific subway systems. Moser also discovered that advertisements prevent you from accessing playback controls, making it impossible to skip them. The news comes not long after Netflix's co-CEO and chief content officer Ted Sarandos confirmed that the ad-supported tier also wouldn't have access to all of the streaming platform's content. He explained that while every Netflix Original will be accessible, some of the service's third-party films and shows might not be viewable with ads due to licensing agreements.
For the time being, Netflix has not announced an official launch date or pricing details for the ad-supported tier. However, given its limitations, the plan will need a relatively reasonable price tag if it attracts new consumers.
