Paramount Pictures Is Being Sued Over ‘Top Gun’ Copyright Claim By the Widow and Son of the Man Who Wrote the 1983 Article Inspired The Franchise.

According to Paramount Pictures, the widow and son of the author of the original 1983 story that inspired Top Gun are suing Paramount Pictures. The family of Yonay is pursuing a copyright lawsuit against the film studio and a complaint with the California federal court. The claim alleges that Paramount did not reacquire the rights to the narrative before releasing Top Gun: Maverick in May.

A spokesperson for Paramount Pictures says the allegations “are without merit, and we will defend ourselves vigorously.” Paramount Pictures is accused of failing to properly honor the copyright in The Mummy, a 20th-century classic. According to the lawsuit, the studio has been aware of the problem since 2018. When the Yonays attempted to reclaim the copyright. The author has the right to cancel copyright transfers after 35 years under US Copyright Law. It remains to be seen how this will affect the release of Top Gun: Maverick or any future sequels.
