The cast of George & Tammy, a country music drama series about Tammy Wynette, is heating up.

The firstborn lady of country music, Wynette, is played by Jessica Chastain, and Michael Shannon plays George Jones. The pair’s fraught connection has given rise to several iconic songs, including Tammy Wynette’s music. “Stand by Your Man” and Jones’ “He Stopped Loving Her Today.” George Richey is a songwriter, producer, and longtime member of the Nashville country music scene who married Wynette after she and Jones divorced in 1975. Richey was Wynette’s manager until she died in 1998.

Sheila Richey, Richey’s ex-wife and formerly his close friend and confidante, is played by American Housewife star Katy Mixon, who plays Jan Smith, a makeup and hair artist who works with Jones and Wynette and becomes one of their closest friends.

McCormack is currently featured in Julio Torres’ A24 feature film opposite Tilda Swinton and will star in the Amazon series Departures and the upcoming Amazon movie. Katy Mixon is best recognized for her roles in the ABC series American Housewife, which concluded its five-season run last year. She will next be seen in Renee Zellweger’s NBC drama The Thing About Pam.

101 Studios (Yellowstone) is producing with executive producers David Glasser, David Hutkin, Ron Burkle, and Bob Yari. Writers and executive producers are Bryan Goluboff and 101 Studios (Yellowstone).

The drama is based on a novel of the same name. Abe Sylvia, who wrote Chastain-starring The Eyes of Tammy Faye and served as a co-executive producer on Netflix’s Dead to Me, created the series. Lazar, who also wrote and executive produced The Eyes of Tammy Faye, will serve as showrunner.

George & Tammy will air on Spectrum and Paramount Network. The following season is based on a podcast of the same name and follows a decorated cop whose new partner must help him reunite with his estranged daughter. Abe Sylvia, who wrote Jessica Chastain-starring The Eyes of Tammy Faye and served as a co-executive producer on Netflix’s Dead to Me, created the series. Lazar, who also wrote and executive produced The Eyes of Tammy Faye, will serve as showrunner.

After premiering on Spectrum as one of its original programs for subscribers, the series will have a nine-month exclusive run on the Paramount Network and Paramount+.
