In His Own HBO Max Series, Colin Farrell’s Penguin Will Finally Be ‘Back On The Streets Of Gotham’

This is the latest high-profile project for HBO Max, which has also given a series order to Dune: The Sisterhood, a spinoff of the upcoming Denis Villeneuve-directed film. Farrell is also set to star in that series.

The Batman was one of the summer’s biggest hits, grossing over $1 billion at the global box office. Starring Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader, the film also featured Zoë Kravitz, Andy Serkis, and John Turturro.

HBO Max has given a straight-to-series order to the previously reported Penguin spinoff, capitalizing on The Batman’s box office success. The Penguin will expand on Colin Farrell’s brief but crucial role in The Batman and explore the inner workings of the mobster as he capitalizes on the power vacuum created by the film’s events. Directed by Emmy-winner Danny Boyle, the series is expected to start production this fall.

“We are thrilled to be working with the talented Danny Boyle on this series,” said HBO Max’s head of original programming, Casey Bloys. “He is a master at creating unique and unforgettable worlds, and we can’t wait for him to do the same with The Penguin.”

With the success of The Batman, it’s no surprise that HBO Max is looking to capitalize on the character with a spinoff series. The Penguin will explore the inner workings of the mobster, giving fans a closer look at one of the most popular characters in the Batman universe. This fall, the series is expected to start production with Emmy-winner Danny Boyle directing.

“Colin exploded off the screen as the Penguin in ‘The Batman,’ and having the chance to thoroughly explore the inner life of that character on HBO Max is an absolute thrill,” Reeves said in a statement provided by HBO Max. “Dylan and I are so excited to work with Lauren in continuing Oz’s story as he grabs violently for power in Gotham.”

Ferrell is eager to don the outfit’s prosthetics again, which makes him seem completely different from the iconic Batman villain.

“The world that Matt Reeves created for ‘The Batman’ is one that warrants a deeper gaze through the eyes of Oswald Cobblepot,” Farrell said in a statement. “I couldn’t be more excited about continuing this exploration of Oz as he rises through the darkened ranks to become The Penguin. Will be good to get him back on the streets of Gotham for a little madness and a little mayhem.”

Penguin’s series order comes on the heels of recent uncertainty about The Batman spinoffs. Reeves revealed that the previously announced Gotham PD spinoff was scrapped during interviews to promote the film. However, he backtracked and said that rather than focusing on the Gotham police, the show has evolved to focus on Arkham Asylum.

As for The Penguin, the show’s existence didn’t appear to be in question until the Gotham PD news threw the spinoff series’ present condition into doubt. However, it seems that Warner Bros. and HBO Max are entirely on board with the project.
