The Possibility of a School of Rock Sequel is on the Table, Says Richard Linklater

Date:

Key Takeaways:
– Director Richard Linklater has expressed open interest in creating a sequel to the popular film School of Rock.
– He insists that there needs to be a good reason to initiate a sequel and it must involve something special to express.
– Jack Black, the star of the original movie, has shown interest in reprising his role as long as the original writer, Mike White, is involved.

The Longing for a School of Rock Sequel

For rock and roll lovers and movie aficionados alike, news around the possibility of a sequel to the popular film School of Rock has been circulating lately. Director Richard Linklater, however, emphasizes that the right elements need to be in place before the sequel can become a reality.

The Right Reason for a Sequel

In a recent interview with UNILAD, Linklater commented on the potential of a follow-up to the 2003’s beloved comedy, School of Rock. He acknowledged that the talks for a sequel have been in the pipelines for several years, and that he would be more than willing to partner with Jack Black once again, given unique conditions.

He was quoted saying, “It has been a long time. There was talk of it years ago but I’d love to work with Jack again. But there’s got to be a reason. There’s got to be something.” He further insisted that there must be a worthwhile idea compelling enough to warrant a sequel.

The Role of Timing

Linklater’s statement conveyed an additional point about timing. Too much time lapsed between an original film and its sequel can often dilute public interest. However, he also acknowledged the sheer economic benefit of quickly produced sequels, which he refers to as ‘victory lap sequels.’

He stated, “There’s another type of sequel I usually call the ‘victory lap sequel’. They’re usually out pretty quick, they’re economic, and everyone knows it…We’re way beyond that, so why would you do it unless there’s something specific to tell…There’s always a good idea to be had.”

Jack Black’s Interest

Adding more meat to the sequel speculation, Jack Black, the film’s leading star, also expressed an eagerness in revisiting his role as Dewey Finn, but only if original writer Mike White is a part of the project, indicating a respect for the original team’s composition.

The Bond of the Original Cast

As fans await official news on the sequel’s development, past reunions and certain events celebrating the first film hint at the possibility of resurrecting the original cast and narrative, though it’s clear that the team isn’t settling for an ordinary sequel.

The Question of Demand

With the nostalgia factor and the resurgence of classic films, the question remains whether the audience is sufficiently large, or if too much time has passed since the original film’s release. Let us know your thoughts on whether or not it’s time to rock with a School of Rock sequel in the comments.
