All The Information We Have About ‘The Invitation to a Bonfire’ TV Show.
Tatiana Maslany will take on the role of Vera Orlov’s fictionalized version of Véra Nabokov in the AMC adaptation of Invitation to a Bonfire. This new role is much different from her last one in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe; instead of playing She-Hulk, Maslany will now inhabit the life of Nabokov.

Here’s a quick rundown of everything we know thus far about the series.
It is an adaptation of Adrienne Celt’s book of the same name.
Celt’s 2018 novel tells the story of a young Soviet refugee named Zoya who studied at an elite girls’ boarding school in New Jersey in the 1920s. She is an outcast at the school, but everything changes when Russian writer Leo Orlov arrives. Per the description, “With the arrival of visiting writer and fellow Russian émigré Leo Orlov—whose books Zoya has privately obsessed over for years—her luck seems poised to change, but the relationship that forms between them will put Zoya, Leo, and his calculating wife, Vera, all at risk.”
“Vera and I,” Zoya narrates, “have become so tangled together that to tell you my whole story, I have to tell you hers, too.” Zoya, Vera, and Leo’s love triangle drive the story forward.
Tatiana Maslany will star in the show and act as an executive producer.
Maslany, who won an Emmy for her role in Orphan Black and played the titular superhero in the Marvel show She-Hulk, will portray Vera. She’ll be joined by Scottish actress Freya Mavor as Zoya and Danish actor Pilou Asbaek as Leo Orlov. Ngozi Anyanwu also has a starring role in the show, but her character is currently unspecified.
“The entire cast so far is incredible. I am unspeakably excited,” author Adrienne Celt tweeted.
“Tatiana is a singular talent who we’ve wanted to bring back to the AMC Networks family since her iconic and career-defining performance in Orphan Black,” Dan McDermott, AMC AMC Studios president, said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to have her join Invitation to a Bonfire’s talented cast and watch her bring to life the wild flame that is Vera Orlov, both on-screen and behind the scenes as an executive producer.”
In a previous interview, McDermott had claimed, “Bonfire allows us to explore the world of love, loss, identity, and complication that viewers will be lost in.” Maslany will collaborate on executive producing with Robin Schwartz and Kyle Laursen.
Is Invitation to a Bonfire based on a real story?
The story is inspired by the real-life marriage of Vladimir and Véra Nabokov. Vera, born Vera Slonim into a Jewish family in Saint Petersburg, left Russia during the Russian Revolution. In Berlin’s émigré community, she met Vladimir Nabokov, and they married in 1925.
In 1940, they emigrated to the United States with their six-year-old son Dmitri. From 1941 to 1942, Nabokov taught at Wellesley College in Massachusetts, and from 1948 until 1959, he taught at Cornell University in New York; both of these schools may have served as inspiration for the fictitious boarding school in Invitation to a Bonfire.
Writing in the New Yorker, Judith Thurman saidVera “was his first reader, his agent, his typist, his archivist, his translator, his dresser, his money manager, his mouthpiece, his muse, his teaching assistant, his driver, his bodyguard (she carried a pistol in her handbag), the mother of his child, and, after he died, the implacable guardian of his legacy.” Véra also destroyed all of the couple’s love letters throughout their life.
Nabokov was married but had multiple affairs—most notably with Irina Guadanini in 1937.
Invitation to a Bonfire will be premiering in 2023
AMC has commissioned the first season of six episodes, which will premiere at some unknown point in the future. As soon as we learn more, we’ll update this article.
