Ryan Coogler is an American film director, producer, and screenwriter. His first feature film, Fruitvale Station (2013), won the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award for U.S. dramatic films at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. He also wrote and directed the critically acclaimed Creed (2015), starring Michael B. Jordan. Coogler’s upcoming film, Black Panther (2018), is one of the most highly anticipated films of the year.

Coogler was born and raised in Oakland, California. He is a graduate of Saint Mary’s College of California and the USC School of Cinematic Arts. His short film, LENNY COOGLER: THE FRUITVALE STATION STORY (2013), won the 2013 Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject.

Coogler’s films are known for portraying solid African-American protagonists and social commentary. His work has been praised by critics and audiences alike, and he is considered one of the most exciting young filmmakers working today.

Before the release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, intrigued Marvel fans have been questioning the director about what would happen to W’Kabi, played by Daniel Kaluuya, since his loss in the first film. Ryan Coogler recently confirmed W’kabi’s fate to Cinema Blend.

When asked about one of Black Panther’s secondary antagonists, Coogler responded concisely, saying, “Yeah, he’s basically banished, but still in Wakanda’s borders. Yeah, does that make sense? So, there’s one line [in Wakanda Forever] that refers to him still being alive.” The update provides valuable context to the character’s defeat in the last film, where his wife held him at spearpoint.

W’Kabi was banished for valid reasons- he initially showed skepticism to T’Challa’s rule. He later becomes a turncoat and joins Erik Killmonger in an attempt to overthrow Wakanda. This summer, Kaluuya announced that he would not be returning to the sequel film. He did not give his reasoning at the time.

The much-anticipated movie Black Panther: Wakanda Forever arrives in theaters on November 11.
