Amazon Announces ‘Blade Runner 2049’ Sequel Series

Date:

Amazon Has Greenlit A Sequel Series Based On The ‘Blade Runner 2049’ Film.

Amazon has announced that they have ordered a sequel series to “Blade Runner.” The live-action limited series, titled “Blade Runner 2099” was first revealed by Ridley Scott in November 2021. This news comes after the streamer announced back in February that the show was in development.

Although we don’t know many specifics yet, the title of the show lets us know that it takes place fifty years after “Blade Runner 2049,” the 2017 sequel to the original film “Blade Runner.” Silka Luisa is the head writer and executive producer, with Ridley Scott also acting as an executive producer under his company banner, Scott Free Productions.

Michael Green, known for his work on “Blade Runner 2049,” will team up with executive producers Alcon Entertainment co-founders Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, David W. Zucker, Clayton Krueger of Scott Free, Cynthia Yorkin, Frank Giustra, Isa Dick Hackett, and head of television Ben Roberts. In addition to working in the writer’s room, Tom Spezialy will also serve as an executive producer.

“The original ‘Blade Runner,’ directed by Ridley Scott, is considered one of the greatest and most influential science-fiction movies of all time, and we’re excited to introduce ‘Blade Runner 2099’ to our global Prime Video customers,” said Vernon Sanders, head of global television for Amazon Studios. “We are honored to be able to present this continuation of the ‘Blade Runner’ franchise, and are confident that by teaming up with Ridley, Alcon Entertainment, Scott Free Productions, and the remarkably talented Silka Luisa, ‘Blade Runner 2099’ will uphold the intellect, themes, and spirit of its film predecessors.”

Alcon Entertainment obtained the rights to “Blade Runner” in 2011 and has since then financed and produced “Blade Runner 2049” as well as the series “Blade Runner: Black Lotus.”

“We are delighted to continue our working relationship with our friends at Amazon,” Kosove and Johnson said. “And we are beyond excited to continue to extend the ‘Blade Runner’ canon into a new realm with the provocative storyline that Silka has created. Audiences first discovered Ridley Scott’s brilliant vision for ‘Blade Runner’ 40 years ago, and since then, it has become one of the most influential science-fiction films of all time. Denis Villeneuve’s follow-up sequel, ‘Blade Runner 2049,’ then became one of the best-reviewed sequels of all time. So, we recognize that we have a very high bar to meet with this next installment. Together with Silka and our partners at Amazon, and Scott Free Productions, we hope that we can live up to that standard and delight audiences with the next generation of ‘Blade Runner.’”

“Blade Runner,” the original film, was released in 1982. Its plot is based on Philip K. Dick’s book, “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” well-known actors such as Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, and Edward James Olmos starred in it. The movie wasn’t popular when it first came out but garnered strong praise from critics and developed a cult following eventually. In addition to the theatrical release back in ’82, there was also a director’s cut released in 1992 followed by “The Final Cut” 15 years later in 2007.

The Blade Runner 2049 sequel was released in 2017 and had Ryan Gosling, Jared Leto, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, Carla Juri, Lennie James, and Dave Bautista joining the cast. The movie received good reviews from critics like the original and made $259 million dollars worldwide with a reported budget of only $150 million.

“Blade Runner 2099” is the latest large-scale genre show Amazon has worked on in recent years. Most famously, the streaming arm of the online retail giant is currently airing “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.” There are also shows like the spy thriller “Jack Ryan,” the recently concluded sci-fi drama “The Expanse,” and the fantasy series “The Wheel of Time.”
