Bob Iger Returns as CEO of Disney

Date:

Just a few months after announcing his retirement, Bob Iger is returning as CEO of the Walt Disney Company. Iger will take over from current CEO Bob Chapek, who will continue to serve as chairman of the board of directors. Iger’s return comes as the company faces several challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent ousting of its top executive in China.

Bob Iger’s Tenure at Disney

Iger joined Disney in 2005 and has been credited with turning the company around. Under his leadership, Disney acquired Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm, and launched its successful streaming service, Disney+. Iger stepped down as CEO in 2020 but remained on the board of directors and as executive chairman of Disney parks, experiences, and products.

The Controversies During Chapek’s Tenure

Chapek took over as CEO from Iger in 2020 and immediately faced a number of challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and protests at Disneyland over health care benefits. In addition, Chapek was criticized for his handling of the firing of James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and for his decision to rehire director Guy Ritchie for Aladdin.
