Date:

How much does a casting director make a year?

A casting director is someone who chooses the talent to appear in a movie, TV show, or modeling production. There are no special educational requirements to become a casting director. However, it helps if someone in the casting industry has experience acting and understands the fundamentals of character analysis, film industry expectations, and character development. Many casting directors work as independent contractors; While casting companies employ others. Because the film industry depends on every production, the salary of a casting director depends on the movie, tv-show, and individual.

So how much does a casting director make?

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Employment and Wages report, the median salary for casting directors in 2011 was $70,660 per year or about $34 an hour. The bottom 10 percent of those casting directors made no less than $32,000 per year, while the top 10 percent earned over $187,000 per year.

But, how much casting directors earn depends where casting directors live and work. For example, the two-highest paying states for casting directors are California and New York. California casting directors receive, on average, $62 per hour while New York casting directors make about $54 per hour.

CDs who have been in the business for a long time earn more than new casting directors. For example, major film producers and film directors pay big money to experienced casting directors to hire background actors to work on a production. As a casting director builds a list of clients, he or she creates a name in the entertainment industry, which results in higher compensation. For example, the salary for a casting director that only casts student short films earns less than the casting director for a big-budget feature film.
