Christopher Nolan Says ‘Oppenheimer’ Has “Zero” CGI Shots

As the highly anticipated release of Christopher Nolan's biopic thriller, “Oppenheimer,” draws near, the acclaimed director has made a surprising revelation: the film contains absolutely no CGI shots. Nolan remains steadfast in his commitment to authenticity, eschewing computer-generated effects in favor of practical techniques to bring this historical nuclear tale to life.

Undertaking the ambitious task of recreating the testing of an atomic bomb, Nolan discussed the process in a recent interview with Collider. “Oppenheimer” is an adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book “American Prometheus” by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin. The film chronicles the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the renowned American physicist widely regarded as the father of the atomic bomb. Portrayed by the talented Cillian Murphy, Oppenheimer's story undoubtedly includes scenes depicting the devastating impact of nuclear blasts and the meticulous replication of the tests carried out by scientists in the desert.

Nolan and his team achieved a monumental feat by recreating the historic 1945 test explosion in New Mexico without CGI. This accomplishment required meticulous planning and logistical prowess. Not only did the team develop new technology to film the black-and-white sequences in IMAX, but they also strived to match the visual brilliance of the actual explosion. Alongside Murphy, the film features a stellar cast including Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Jack Quaid, Benny Safdie, Rami Malek, Dane DeHaan, Josh Hartnett, Matthew Modine, Kenneth Branagh, David Krumholtz, Michael Angarano, and Alden Ehrenreich.
