How HBO and Netflix Pitched ‘Lord of the Rings’ TV Series

HBO and Netflix reportedly discussed a ‘Lord of the Rings’ TV series.

The Hollywood Reporter recently reported that both Netflix and HBO were in the running to produce a Lord of the Rings TV series. However, Amazon landed the rights to develop the series, which is now titled Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

According to the report, HBO’s potential was “essentially remaking” The Lord of the Rings has been transformed into a TV series, but it’s a continuation of Peter Jackson’s trilogy. However, the estate was not interested in resuming Middle-Earth in the Third Age. Netflix seems to be taking a different approach, with possible upcoming series focused on Ganalf and Aragorn drama. An insider equated their pitch to the “Marvel approach [which]…completely freaked out the estate.”

Amazon was particular with its vision for The Rings of Power and interviewed many writers, directors, and producers before settling on the Second Age of Middle-Earth. In September, the first two episodes aired and became Amazon’s most-watched premiere within 24 hours, gaining over 25 million viewers worldwide. The first season will have 20 episodes, and it’s already been renewed for a second season. The show is set to film in New Zealand.
