Margot Robbie Reveals She Initially Wanted To Cast Gal Gadot as Barbie

Date:

Margot Robbie‘s Choice for Barbie: Gal Gadot

In a recent interview with Vogue, Margot Robbie, the lead actress and executive producer of the upcoming Barbie, discuss her thoughts on the sexualization of the iconic doll. Robbie shared that she initially had Gal Gadot in mind for the role of Barbie and opened up about the controversies surrounding the doll’s image.

Reflecting on the sexualization of Barbie, Robbie stated, “She’s essentially a plastic doll without organs or reproductive capabilities. Without those, can she even experience sexual desire? I highly doubt it.” The actress emphasized that while Barbie has been sexualized by society, she should never be perceived as inherently sexy. Robbie argued that people often project their sexual interpretations onto the doll, despite her intentions. “Sure, she can wear a short skirt, but it’s all about fun and embracing her iconic pink aesthetic, not about inviting objectification,” Robbie explained.

Robbie also preferred Gal Gadot to Barbie. She described Gadot as embodying the energy and qualities of Barbie. “Gal Gadot exudes the essence of Barbie. Her breathtaking beauty is complemented by genuine sincerity, enthusiastic kindness, and a touch of quirkiness.

In addition to Margot Robbie’s portrayal of Barbie, the film will feature an ensemble cast, including Ryan Gosling as Ken, and talented actors such as America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Will Ferrell, Ariana Greenblatt, Emma Mackey, Alexandra Shipp, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Hari Nef, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Rhea Perlman, Ncuti Gatwa, Emerald Fennell, Sharon Rooney, Scott Evans, Ana Cruz Kayne, Connor Swindells, Ritu Arya, Jamie Demetriou, and Marisa Abela.

Barbie is set to hit theaters on July 21.
