In a candid conversation with The Guardian, Michael Imperioli, renowned for his portrayal of Christopher Moltisanti on the iconic HBO series ‘The Sopranos,’ opened up about the most demanding scene he had to film throughout his acting career.
Notably, Imperioli pointed to the instances where his character engaged in abusive behavior towards his on-screen fiancée, Adriana La Cerva, portrayed by Drea de Matteo.
Addressing the grueling nature of such scenes, Imperioli shared, “The most brutal, difficult stuff for me is when Christopher had to be physically abusive with Adriana, for obvious reasons.” He further explained the intricate balance required while executing these scenes to ensure the safety and emotional well-being of all those involved. “On a technical level, you’re trying to be careful so you don’t hurt the person. But having to get to that point of violence toward a woman, you must go to some nasty places to get there,” Imperioli elaborated.
He elucidated the multifaceted approach actors often employ to delve into the emotional intensity of these scenarios. “Sometimes it’s very immediate. Sometimes it’s something present in your life that you can tap into. Sometimes you have to go someplace from the past. And sometimes you have to go to someplace imaginary,” he shared. Imperioli emphasized the complexity of such performances, revealing that embodying such dark emotions can be more challenging than scenes involving mobster activities or drug use.
Reflecting on the collaborative effort behind these scenes, Imperioli acknowledged the presence of stunt doubles occasionally but noted the difficulty of fully controlling the emotional intensity during the performance. “And even then, it’s one thing to choreograph and rehearse; when you act full-tilt with all the emotion, it’s easy not to have as much control as in the rehearsal. So you have to be quite careful,” he cautioned.
As an integral part of “The Sopranos” for its entire six-season run, Imperioli carried his character’s legacy into the prequel film “The Many Saints of Newark,” released in 2021, where he lent his voice as the narrator. He also shared his deep admiration for his co-star, James Gandolfini, emphasizing Gandolfini’s unwavering commitment to authenticity in their scenes. “He always put in 110%. He managed to find the intensity and the reality in every moment. That pushed you further,” Imperioli praised.
