HBO Max Reaches 4.1 Million Subscribers in One Month

Date:

HBO Max Gets 4.1 Million subscribers in its first month with plans to reach 50 million by 2025.

AT&T CEO John Stanley called it a “flawless launch” despite the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. HBO Max reached 4.1 million subscribers. 3.1 million are regular customers, while the remaining 1 million are subscribed through AT&T wireless packages.

On an earnings call on Thursday, the company revealed its plans to reach 50 million subscribers by 2025, and their projections put the company on track to reach this revenue goal. Currently, HBO and HBO Max have a combined subscriber base of 36.3 million, making it a 5% increase since 2019.

Engagement on the HBO Max shows has also been positive. 70% more average weekly hours were watched than HBO’s other service, HBO Now, which AT&T CEO attributes to the platform’s “world-class content.” Stanley added that by August the streaming platform will have 21 new original productions, which he believes “will sustain our near-term sub acquisition effort.”

This news comes after a report HBO Max is working on a ‘The Batman’ spinoff TV Series. The upcoming series will be a police TV series that is set in the same world Reeves is developing in the upcoming Pattinson movies. Terrence Winter will write the show’s script and it will focus around Gotham City Police Department’s attempt to keep the city safe. According to the press release, the series will focus on “the motion picture’s examination […] of corruption in Gotham City, ultimately launching a new Batman universe across multiple platforms.”

HBO Max has not released the show’s name. However, some sources suggest the show will be called ‘Gotham Central’. Director Reeves also made a statement saying, “This is an amazing opportunity, not only to expand the vision of the world I am creating in the film but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a long-form format can afford.”
