Georgia-Filmed ‘Night School’ Dominates the Box Office

Date:

Georgia-filmed Night School dominates and beats Smallfoot in the box office.

Universal’s Night School topped the domestic box office with $28 million. Warner Bros.’ Smallfoot came in second with $23 million when it launched. The two movies helped launch the second-best September of all time in the United States, according to comScore.

Georgia-filmed Night School, which cost $29 million to produce, makes it the biggest debut of 2018 for a comedy. The film saw Tiffany Haddish reunite with Girls Trip director Malcolm D. Lee and producer Will Packer. That said, Night School did not receive the same love from the critics as Girls Trip. In fact, the movie had a 31% average on Rotten Tomatoes, whereas Girls Trip had a 90% certified fresh rating.

However, it is pretty common for comedies to receive low rankings on Rotten Tomatoes. On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 43 out of 100, based on 24 critics, indicating “mixed or average reviews”. Audiences surveyed by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of “A–“, while PostTrak reported filmgoers gave it 3.5 out of 5 stars.

The movie centers around a group of young adults who set out to earn their GEDs. The film was released in the United States by Universal Pictures on September 28, 2018, and received below-average reviews from critics.

Smallfoot stars the voices of Channing Tatum, James Corden, Zendaya, Common, LeBron James, Gina Rodriguez, Danny DeVito, Yara Shahidi, Ely Henry, and Jimmy Tatro. The movie centers around a group of Yeti who meet human, with each group thinking the other was just a myth. It received generally positive reviews from critics and has grossed over $38 million worldwide.
