After 25 successful years, Netflix discontinued its DVD mail-out rental service.
Did you know that Netflix subscribers can still rent physical DVDs from the streaming provider? Many people may have yet to be aware of this feature! After all, the company was created in 1998 as a DVD-by-mail rental program.
After a quarter of a century of providing DVDs by mail – admittedly to an ever-shrinking subscriber base lately – the company has sadly declared that it will be ceasing this service.
Despite its booming on-demand streaming service, Netflix quietly operated its DVD program through dvd.com for years. In the years since its founding, this service has sent out an impressive 5 billion DVDs to customers across America.
Sadly, the rental service is ending this year when its last DVDs are sent out.
“On September 29th, 2023, we will send out the last red envelope,” Netflix shared on Twitter. “It has been a pleasure and honor to deliver movie nights to our wonderful members for 25 years. Thank you for being part of this incredible journey, including this final season of red envelopes.”
With most Netflix subscribers now streaming from their TVs and mobile phones, today marks a bittersweet moment for traditional DVD lovers who don’t have access to smart devices.
