Quentin Tarantino Tells Black Critics: My Skin Color Doesn’t Matter

Quentin Tarantino says black critics that his skin color doesn’t matter.

Quentin Tarantino is known in Hollywood for repeatedly using the N-word, when many people, especially other filmmakers such as Spike Lee, find it unnecessary and downright disrespectful. In fact, Spike Lee thought Quentin Tarantino’s movies were so offensive that it ruined his friendship with Samuel L. Jackson for several years, after Jackson worked on the movie Pulp Fiction alongside Quentin Tarantino.

But, in a recent interview with The New York Times Magazine, the writer, director, and filmmaker, Quentin Tarantino responded to the criticism by saying his race was ultimately irrelevant.

The director of the upcoming film The Hateful Eight told the The New York Times that he didn’t care he was bashed in “savage think pieces” by black critics for 2012’s Django Unchained, but in his opinion it really did bother the filmmaker.

“If people don’t like my movies, they don’t like my movies, and if they don’t get it, it doesn’t matter,” Tarantino said. “The bad taste that was left in my mouth had to do with this: It’s been a long time since the subject of a writer’s skin was mentioned as often as mine. You wouldn’t think the color of a writer’s skin should have any effect on the words themselves.”

Tarantino, who won a best original screenplay Oscar for the Jamie Foxx slave revenge story, made many critics really upset with the director.

“In a lot of the more ugly pieces my motives were really brought to bear in the most negative way,” he said. “It’s like I’m some supervillain coming up with this stuff.”

Spike Lee was one of the most vocal critics of Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained movie.

“This is the best time to get out there because there actually is a genuine platform,” he added. “Now it’s being talked about.’’

It is important to note that in the movie Django Unchained featured the N-word over 100 times. And during the filming of one of the dinner scenes, Leonardo DiCaprio had to stop the scene because he was having “a difficult time” using so many racial slurs. Samuel L. Jackson then pulled him aside telling him, “Motherfucker, this is just another Tuesday for us.”

The Hateful Eight will be released on Christmas Day.
