Quentin Tarantino has caught wind of Kanye West’s recent claim that he stole the idea for Django Unchained from him, and he had this to say.

During a conversation with Jimmy Kimmel, Tarantino denied the allegations and said that “there’s no truth to the idea,” adding that he already had plans for Django Unchained before he even met Ye. “Okay, well, there’s no truth to the idea that Kanye West came up with the idea of Django, and then he told it to me, and I go, ‘Hey, wow, that’s a really great idea. Let me take Kanye’s idea and make Django Unchained out of it.’ That didn’t happen,” he confirmed.

Although the filmmaker stayed tight-lipped about most things, they let slip that the West had considered making a “giant version” of College Dropout at one point. They also briefly shared the idea for a “Gold Digger” music video that the artist had. “He wanted to get big directors to do different tracks from the album and then release it as this, like, giant movie,” he said. “Not videos, oh no, there’s nothing as crass as videos — they were movies. They were gonna be movies based on each of the different tracks. So we used it as an excuse, me and Kanye, we used it as an excuse to meet each other.”

Tarantino continued, “He did have an idea for a video, and I do think it was for the Gold Digger video, that he would be a slave, and the whole thing was this slave narrative, where he’s a slave, and he’s singing Gold Digger.” The plans never came to fruition, supposedly because West wanted “no expenses spared” for the project, but filmmaker thought that “it sounded really cool” and he wishes it had happened. “Anyway, that’s what he’s referring to.”
