Showtime says the ‘Dexter’ Spinoff will not even be a spinoff at all
If you haven’t watched Dexter before the series centers on Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), a blood spatter pattern analyst for Miami Metro Police Department who also leads a secret life as a serial killer, hunting down criminals who have slipped through the cracks of the justice system. Set in Miami, the show’s first season derived from the novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter (2004), the first of the Dexter seriesnovels by Jeff Lindsay. It was adapted for television by screenwriter James Manos, Jr., who wrote the first episode. Subsequent seasons evolved separate from of Lindsay’s books.
But, way before Dexter aired their series finale, there were rumors that Showtime was planning a Dexter spinoff. During the Television Critics Association this week, Showtime president David Nevins plans on rebooting Dexter.
It is important to note that the Dexter spinoff because would be completely different because it would continue to be about Michael C. Hall’s character, Dexter. “I would want to do Dexter in a new concept and configuration. I want it to feel different – not just a continuation of the old show.”
So it wouldn’t be a new show, but it would be a new “concept? That doesn’t make a lot of sense unless Dexter is a serial killer in Alaska. Or the Dexter series is rebooted in a different location.
But, if it’s the same show and a continuation of the series why not just call it Dexter season 9?
It is important to point out that the Showtime President had no plans on killing Dexter in the series finale.
“Honestly, it was never even discussed, the idea of killing him. The people who were really in the center, which was Michael, Scott Buck, Sara Colleton, it was never even… no one even brought up the idea. It wasn’t discussed.”
Which it seriously begs the question? Why not? It would have been the perfect ending to a show that was getting worse and worse every season. No wonder Dexter ended so poorly, the producers had problems of letting go.
