Spotify Chief Shares Disgust for Kanye “Ye” West’s Antisemitic Comments, But His Music Won’t Be Removed

Date:

Daniel Ek, CEO of Spotify, stated that the company would not remove Kanye West‘s music from its platform unless his label requested it. The recent antisemitic remarks by the rapper-turned-fashion mogul have led to numerous corporations boycotting him, increasing pressure on music streaming services to remove his albums from their platforms.

On Tuesday, in an interview with Reuters, CEO Daniel Ek of Spotify addressed Ye’s recent comments, calling them “awful.” He made it clear that the music does not violate their policies against hate speech. If Universal Music Group Def Jam imprint feels compelled to pull his music, that is up to them per Ek.

“It’s really just his music, and his music doesn’t violate our policy,” Ek told Reuters, adding, “It’s up to his label if they want to take action or not,” Ek noted that if Ye had made his antisemitic comments on a podcast or recording, they would have pulled them from Spotify as per their hate speech policy. However, the rapper hadn’t said anything similar previously.

The rapper Ye’s recordings from 2002 through 2016 are owned by Def Jam. His contract with his record company expired when his album DONDA was released in 2021.

“Def Jam’s relationship with Ye as a recording artist, Def Jam’s partnership with the GOOD Music label venture, and Ye’s merchandise agreement with Bravado all ended in 2021,” Def Jam said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “There is no place for antisemitism in our society. We are deeply committed to combating antisemitism and every other form of prejudice.”

Hollywood blacklisted rapper Ye after he made antisemitic comments during interviews and on social media. WME CEO Ari Emanuel asked Spotify, Apple Music, and other corporations to stop working with the musician. In response, talent agency CAA dropped him as a client, MRC Entertainment shelved plans for a documentary about him, and Balenciaga, GAP, and Vogue ended their partnerships with Ye.

On Monday, Ye’s most significant corporate sponsor, Adidas, ended its partnership with Yeezy.
