The Creator of Netflix’s ‘Squid Game,’ Hwang Dong-hyuk, Tells Fans Not to Take Spinoff “Too Seriously”

The ‘Squid Game’ will be brought to life with a substantial cash award in the form of the “Challenge.”

The creator of Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk, has told fans not to worry about the show’s spinoff, Squid Game: The Challenge. He said they should not “take things too seriously.”

After the 2022 Emmys, where Hwang, the program, and its cast received historic victories, including Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for “Red Light, Green Light,” Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Lee Jung-Jae, and more — which he announced immediately after The Challenge’s creator met with him – Heoktro became an official part of Challenge family.

“I think that even though our show does carry quite a heavy message — and I know that there are some concerns of taking that message and creating it into a reality show with a cash prize,” he said. “However, I feel like when you take things too seriously, that’s not the best way to go for the entertainment industry. It doesn’t really set a great precedent.”

He continued, “I would say that reproductions of such efforts are going to bring new meaning to the industry, and I hope that this is going to be a great new direction for the industry overall.”

The Challenge will bring the squid game competitions to life with actual competitors rather than the deaths. A “life-changing” cash prize of $4.56 million is available, and Netflix is currently accepting applications for its 456 contestants.
