Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners Cuts 20 Percent of Staff.
According to reports, Amblin Partners, the film production company founded by Steven Spielberg, has recently undergone significant restructuring, reducing approximately 20 percent of its workforce. This strategic move comes as Amblin enters a new long-term agreement with Universal Studios. The affected employees primarily come from marketing, international operations, and post-production departments.
Under the terms of the new deal with Universal, the studio will now co-finance Amblin’s movies. In the past, Amblin would secure its financing for film projects and then enlist Universal for distribution purposes in exchange for a fee.
While Spielberg’s most recent directorial venture, The Fabelmans, earned an Oscar nomination and was released by Universal, he has yet to announce his next project in the director’s chair.
Amblin Partners currently has several projects in the pipeline. One is an adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s novel Hamnet, which acclaimed director Chloe Zhao will helm. Additionally, the company has acquired the rights to Rob Hart’s novel Assassins Anonymous, slated for release in 2024. Furthermore, Amblin has entered into a partnership with Netflix.
Spielberg expressed his gratitude towards the studio in a statement regarding the new collaboration with Universal, referring to it as his “ancestral studio home.” He also emphasized the importance of creative flexibility and autonomy for Amblin’s future success. Spielberg acknowledged the dedication and hard work of the entire Amblin team throughout the years. He thanked Donna Langley and the Universal team for their commitment and partnership, expressing enthusiasm for the upcoming joint endeavors.
Donna Langley, chairman, and chief content officer of NBCUniversal Studio Group, echoed Spielberg’s sentiments, expressing excitement about the continued evolution of the partnership. Langley praised Spielberg and the Amblin team as exceptional collaborators and looked forward to the next chapter in their longstanding creative legacy. The collaboration between Amblin and Universal has yielded numerous iconic films over the past fifty years, and this new chapter aims to build upon that success.
