The X-files are back and here is everything you need to know about your favorite sci-fi series.
What areĀ The X-Files?
The X-FilesĀ first aired from 1993 to 2002 on Fox and followed the lives of federal agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) as they investigate crimes associated with paranormal activity.
The series was a major hit and spawned two hit movies, the 1998 movie, andĀ The X-Files: I Want to Believe.Ā
Why did they bringĀ The X-FilesĀ back?
In a 2009 interview, Duchovny said he would want to do a newĀ X-FilesĀ movie, but he didn’t know if he would get a chance. In addition, Gillian Anderson said she was interested in returning to the series.Ā At the New York Comic Con held October 10ā13, 2013, Duchovny and Anderson reaffirmed that they and Carter are interested in making a third film, with Anderson saying “If it takes fan encouragement to get Fox interested in that, then I guess thatās what it would be.”
However, 2012 interviews with the show’s creator Ā showed plans on bringing back the TV series, despite doing extremely well in the box office.Ā But, it wasn’t until Fox Television Group chairman and CEO Gary Newman reveal that there was network interest in bringing the series back, not as a movie, but as a miniseries.
The X-Files miniseriesĀ is the latest continuation of the American sci-fi horror drama TV seriesĀ The X-Files,Ā created by Chris Carter, which originally aired for nine seasons in 1993 to 2002 on Fox.
But, it wasn’t until March of 2015 that Fox announced the series would return for a six-episode miniseries.
Scheduling conflicts almost madeĀ The X-FilesĀ reboot impossible…
Once Newman revealed plans of bringing back the series, he noted that the reboot would include “all key players:Ā Carter, Duchovny, and Anderson. However, timing was a major problem for the original cast ofĀ The X-Files.Ā Duchovny was filming the NBC seriesĀ AquariusĀ andĀ Anderson was involved in the BBC dramaĀ The Fall.Ā
However, both cast members expressed their interest in returning to the series.Ā Anderson said that she would be “fucking overjoyed” if Fox brought backĀ The X-Files, and Duchovny said that he would be “more than happy” to reprise his role as Mulder.
In a later interview with GQ Magazine, Anderson explained, when asked about returning for a TV reboot of the show, she was nervous, since she assumed the network would want to order over twenty new episodes. When it was revealed that FOX was only interested in a miniseries, she agreed to reprise her role. But, not without controversy. Initially, Anderson was offered half the pay of Duchovny, but this was later changed so that both leads were compensated the same.
