Keanu Reeves Only Spoke 380 Words in ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’

Date:

In the fourth installment of John Wick, starring Keanu Reeves, the star uttered a mere 380 words – an astonishingly small number for any action-packed blockbuster.

As The Wall Street Journal reported, the newest installment in the John Wick franchise features Keanu Reeves speaking only 380 words. Despite having an impressive 169-minute runtime and nearly three hours long, all of his 103 lines are made up of just one word!

“In the first installment, clocking in at 101 minutes, Mr. Reeves said 484 words. With a run time of 169 minutes, the fourth movie pushes three hours but features just 380 words by Wick. About 10% of them are featured in the movie’s trailer, which makes the hero seem almost chatty; Wick says more in that 2.5-minute clip than he does in the first 25 minutes of the movie itself,” wrote The Wall Street Post.”

As the report further elaborates, Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves conceived a restricted discourse for John Wick: Chapter 4. The duo “stripped out roughly half the dialogue written for his character in the initial script.” For example, John Wick and Marquis de Gramont’s (Bill Skarsgård) conversation about their duel’s rules had Reeves deliver 50% of it. After a re-write by him, his character only responded with single words.

The feature film’s co-screenwriter Michael Finch said, “It’s a shock when you work with him how dedicated he is to not speaking.” In the entire movie, John Wick’s most extensive remark is his exchange with Shimazu Koji (Hiroyuki Sanada), chief of the Osaka Continental Hotel. Wick confidently declares, “You and I left a good life behind long ago, my friend.”

Keanu Reeves chose to show rather than tell by demonstrating his commitment to the fourth installment of the John Wick series, claiming that it was the most physically demanding movie he has ever filmed. For months, Reeves toiled hard to master the stunts needed for his role. Of them all, the most challenging scene was a car chase around Paris’ iconic Arc de Triomphe, where he had to reverse 180 degrees and drift while simultaneously reloading his prop gun and shooting out of the window.

Now playing in theaters everywhere – take your chance to see the highly anticipated John Wick: Chapter 4, starring Keanu Reeves!
