Cast in a New Light

Charlie Hunnam, best known for his pivotal role in Sons of Anarchy, as well as movie roles in Pacific Rim, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, and more, is now reportedly in talks for a significant role in the awaited sequel. Jodie Comer, a remarkable talent of Free Guy and Killing Eve fame, is also rumored to be joining the cast. At this stage, the specifics of the characters they might portray remain undisclosed.

Revisiting the Rage

Directed by renowned filmmaker Danny Boyle, 28 Days Later was released in 2002 and quickly gained cult status. The apocalyptic plot follows Jim (played by Cillian Murphy), who wakes up from a coma to find England overwhelmed by a rage virus.

In the sequel, 28 Years Later, viewers might get a chance to see what became of Jim, assuming Boyle and Garland decide to bring his character back into the story. With Murphy on board as an executive producer, his role on-screen remains unclear.

A Step Towards the Sequels

Notably, the sequel to 28 Years Later is already being penned by screenwriter Alex Garland. With two projects titled 28 Years Later in the creation phase, Boyle has announced his intention to direct only the first project. The sequel, however, will see a different director taking the reins.

Boyle and Garland are co-producing the sequel with Bernie Bellew, Andrew Macdonald, and Peter Rice. Rice was previously the head of Fox Searchlight Pictures, which backed the original 28 Days Later Film.

A Clear Vision for the Trilogy

Sony’s backing of the project signals good news for fans. Each film in the new trilogy will not only enjoy a theatrical release, but they are also projected to be made on a budget of around $60 million. As per The Hollywood Reporter, the original film made significant gains at the box office, earning $82.7 million worldwide, leading to the creation of a sequel, 28 Weeks Later, released in 2007.

28 Years Later marks another step in the continuation of one of cinema’s iconic stories, blending adrenaline-inducing horror with strong characters. Before anything is set in stone, we wait in anticipation to see whether Hunnam and Comer will indeed lend their talents to this memorable saga.
