Impending Decline in Anime Quality: An Animator’s Perspective

Renowned Jujutsu Kaisen animator Vincent Chansard recently shared his insights into the state of the anime industry during an hour-long live stream. Citing late-stage capitalism affecting Japan, he pointed out concerns about both the future prosperity and quality of animation.

Downgrading Anime Through Overproduction

Chansard believes rampant overproduction in an attempt to generate more profit could result in a downfall. The animator stressed that the relentless drive to produce more is affecting the skill levels of he most crucial contributors to the industry, the animators.

Proposed Factors for Industry Renewal

During the live stream, Chansard boldly unveiled his vision for industry reformation, “The two major solutions to the lack of workers are firstly, salary reevaluation to attract more workers and second, more ways for new members to become more qualified,” said the Jujutsu Kaisen animator via KonohaTV.

A Gradual Erosion, not a Total Collapse

Contrary to widespread indifference, Chansard painted a bleak picture of a steady decline rather than a sudden collapse. “Not the fact that it’ll go ‘boom,’ but the fact they will reduce work conditions even more, when they’re already pretty bad as you said,” he added.

Challenging Work Culture at MAPPA

A seasoned studio critic, Chansard vowed never to work again with popular anime studio MAPPA. His intolerance for poor working conditions echoed across the industry causing a stir. He insisted, “I don’t want to support a company that ideologically doesn’t care about working conditions.”

His stand was bolstered by another industry heavyweight, Nishii Terumi, the chief animation director of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, who echoed similar concerns.

A Call for Change in the Anime Industry

Chansard’s candid insights into the Japanese anime industry have shed light on the brewing problems within. His call to action targeting better pay and working conditions, coupled with developing more qualified animators, resonates in the industry.

While the outlook may seem grim, Chansard’s transparency might just be the wakeup call the industry needs to implement sustainable practices, ensuring its growth and prosperity. Anime fans worldwide will be watching how the industry navigates these choppy waters in the future.

Undeniably, the ongoing debate about industry standards serves as a crucial turning point. Will the Japanese anime industry heed the call of its talented animators like Chansard and take the necessary steps to ensure its survival? Only time will tell. Meanwhile, fans can watch Jujutsu Kaisen and other popular anime series on Crunchyroll.
