Renowned screenwriter Beau Willimon, who gained prominence for developing Netflix’s “House of Cards,” has been tasked to co-write the script for James Mangold’s “Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi,” according to a report by The Hollywood Reporter. Willimon, who also has Star Wars credit to his name via the series “Andor,” will proudly share writing duties on the project with Mangold.

Unveiling New Star Wars Depths

“Dawn of the Jedi” is a working title for the anticipated film that is set to navigate 25,000 years prior to the much beloved Skywalker Saga. It is to spotlight the inception of the first Jedi and the unprecedented discovery of the Force. Lucasfilm President, Kathleen Kennedy, recently touched on the project’s core focus.

“Getting a real sense of where it all began with the dawn of the Jedi is a really nice compliment to what we’re doing with moving into the future with Rey,” Kennedy stated. She also mentioned, “it will be at the heart of creating the new Jedi Order, which opens up fantastic possibilities for storytelling.”

Inspired by Biblical Epics

Mangold, while speaking about this new project, affirmed that his inspiration hinged on the 1950s biblical epics, envisioning a Star Wars’ counterpart of the Ten Commandments or a Cecil B. DeMille film focusing on the dawn of the Force.

Likening his creative endeavors to a bible movie, Mangold said, “That’s what I’ve been pecking away at between press events.”

Upcoming Star Wars Filming Schedule

Though Mangold is currently engaged with shooting for his Bob Dylan biopic starring Timothée Chalamet, precise details regarding when the filming for “Dawn of the Jedi” would commence remains undecided. However, “Dawn of the Jedi” won’t be the first new Star Wars film to hit the big screen.

The honor of that premiering act goes to “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” directed by Jon Favreau, with production scheduled to start later this year. It has also been confirmed that the film is slated for release on May 22, 2026.

Expanding the Star Wars Universe

Alongside the Dawn of the Jedi and The Mandalorian movie, the Star Wars universe continues to burgeon with upcoming projects such as Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s post-Rise of Skywalker film featuring Rey (Daisy Ridley) rebuilding the Jedi Order. Moreover, a New Republic movie is being churned in Dave Filoni’s creative sphere, aiming to stitch together narratives from The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and The Book of Boba Fett.
