Dave Bautista Reveals Easier Filming Experience on ‘Dune’ Compared to Marvel Movies

Date:

Dave Bautista, famous for his role as Drax in the Marvel franchise, recently gave some interesting insights into the contrasting experiences he had while filming Marvel movies and the sci-fi epic, ‘Dune’.

Key takeaways:

– Dave Bautista, popular for his role as Drax in Marvel movies, suggests that filming for the MCU movies requires actors to act in front of green screens and imaginary beings.
– The star contrasts this experience with that of filming for Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi flick ‘Dune’, where he had practical sets and real-time actors for company.
– Bautista remarks there’s lesser dependence on imagination while working on the sets of ‘Dune’.
– The difference in filming methodology might have contributed to the success of the ‘Dune’ series.

The Green Screen Chronicles in Marvel Movies

In his candid chat with Game Spot, the former WWE wrestler shared some candid moments from his time working on seven Marvel movies. Bautista confessed how the extensive reliance on green screens and CGI technology made the Marvel experience somewhat challenging for him. This involved acting out sequences with seemingly inexistent characters and elements, often represented by everyday objects like tennis balls.

He said, “I did seven films with Marvel, so my experience with them is different; every film was different. But there were a lot of times on the Marvel stuff where I had to perform it with tennis balls, a lot of green screen, a lot of imaginary stuff.”

The ‘Dune’ Experience: A Breath of Realistic Air

Comparatively, Bautista’s experience whilst filming for ‘Dune’ was quite different. Unlike the Marvel films, which were set in virtually created spaces, ‘Dune’ took advantage of practical sets, authentic backdrops, and real character ensemble to portray the storyline. Bautista appreciated the real and palpable environment created which reduced his dependence on his imaginative abilities.

“And with Dune, the world’s been created for us, a lot of practical sets. And so it wasn’t that I had to depend so much on my imagination. They made it very easy for me, made it very real for me with practical sets and incredible actors. And also I didn’t have to act with CGI characters. And so it was just a completely different experience,” he shared.

The Impact of Denis Villeneuve’s Different Approach

This unique approach by director Denis Villeneuve may have been critical in the success of the ‘Dune’ movies. While Marvel banks heavily on CGI and special effects, ‘Dune’ chose to lay emphasis on the authentic portrayal of the sci-fi universe via practical sets, thus providing a striking divergence.

Actor’s Preparation: A Tale of Two Roles

For Dune’s Rabban and Marvel’s Drax, Bautista’s preparation was markedly different, too. While he had to maintain his physicality and spend hours on complex make-up for Drax, his role in ‘Dune’ was less about physical appearances and more about capturing the essence of the character, thanks to the helpful directions from Villeneuve.

Dave Bautista fans can watch his Marvel movies on Disney+ and stream ‘Dune’ on Max. ‘Dune: Part Two’ can be rented on Amazon.
