The ‘Top Gun: Mavericke’ Opening Weekend Surpasses $151 Million, Landing Tom Cruise His Career-High Box Office Debut.

Top Gun: Maverick is on track to becoming one of Paramount Pictures’ most significant movies ever, with USD 151 million in ticket sales over the weekend. It is a substantial achievement for Tom Cruise, who has topped his career-best debut weekend and the first film to reach USD 100 million on opening day.

The second film in the franchise earned around USD 124 million in ticket sales on Sunday, bringing the worldwide total to well over USD 248 million. Paramount’s president of domestic distribution said, “These results are ridiculous, over-the-top fantastic. I’m happy for everyone. I’m happy for the company, Tom, and the filmmakers.”
The worldwide figure is the best Cruise has seen, according to Deadline, with Jerry Bruckheimer’s sequel his second-best three-day stateside debut behind his 2006 Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. The Top Gun sequel outperformed expectations in western North America, Rockies, South Central, and the southeastern United States and accounted for 7% of the weekend’s business.
Though impressive, the USD 151 million hauls isn’t a pretty record-breaking number. It falls short of Avengers: Endgame’s domestic opening of USD 357 million and Avatar’s USD 176 million global debuts. But, when considering that most movies these days struggle to make back their budgets, Top Gun: Maverick is already a success.
The long-awaited sequel had a troubled road to the big screen. The first announced the Project in 2010, but it wasn’t until 2016 that Cruise finally signed on. Since then, the film has been delayed multiple times due to script issues and scheduling conflicts.
Top Gun: The highest opening for Tom Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski belongs to Maverick, according to the Official Charts Company’s Becca Monahan. It was a pleasure, Ms. Monahan added. “to see Tom Cruise back in the skies again after 36 years” and also noted, “That the original Top Gun has made history by getting to number one on the Official Film Chart and that many of those sales were digital downloads is a great achievement.”
Top Gun: Maverick is now in theaters.
