Casting Call: James Madison University Short Film Projects

Job Overview: James Madison University’s award-winning program, led by Imelda O’Reilly, is casting for four upcoming short films. These projects offer a fantastic opportunity for actors to collaborate with burgeoning filmmakers and add significant experience to their reels. Auditions will be held at the Fashion Institute of Technology in North Chelsea, NYC, with shooting scheduled for the last week of May. We are seeking both SAG and non-SAG actors of all ethnicities for a variety of roles.

Audition Details:

  • Location: Fashion Institute of Technology, North Chelsea, NYC
  • Dates: Tuesday, May 21, 2-7 PM and Wednesday, May 22, 9 AM – 6 PM

Roles Available:

  1. Technical (Family Drama): Multiple roles including Tucker Lawson (early 20s, tall, amateur boxer), Julian Andrews (mid 40s, energetic boxing coach), and others.
  2. Heaven Spot (Adventure): Roles include Tag (late teens, rugged punk), Shamus (mid 20s, clean-cut, protective), and Sky (late teens, creative street artist).
  3. Agent Coffee (Sci-Fi): Featuring Agent Coffee (late 20s-early 30s, stoic government agent), Maury (late 20s-early 30s, alien with telepathic abilities), and others.
  4. Empire of Dirt (Drama): Casting for Jay (mid-late 20s, aspiring poet), Rose (mid-late 20s, Jay’s ex-girlfriend), and additional supporting roles.

Shooting Schedule:

  • Dates: May 27 – May 31 (Note: Individual shoot days may vary from partial to full days)

Compensation:

  • Stipend: Provided (amount TBD)
  • Additional Benefits: Food during shoot days, film credit, and a copy of the completed film
  • Screening: All films will be screened on June 7th in Manhattan

Casting Call: Actors Needed for Table Reading of “WINNERS”

Overview: We are thrilled to announce a casting call for “WINNERS,” a new neurodivergent comedy penned by the talented Emma Goldman Sherman, an actually autistic Jewish writer. This table reading seeks to bring to life the vibrant characters of this engaging play through the experiences and expressions of neurodivergent actors. We encourage qualified candidates to apply as soon as possible for this unique opportunity.

Roles Available:

  1. Male Lead (Jewish, Neurodivergent)

    • Age: 40s-50s
    • Gender: Cis male
    • Character Brief: This role calls for a neurodivergent Jewish man who is unaware of his neurodivergence. The character is complex, with a deep personal history that influences his humorous yet poignant interactions.
  2. Female Lead (Jewish, Neurodivergent)

    • Age: 15-25
    • Gender: Cis female
    • Character Brief: For this role, we are looking for a young, neurodivergent Jewish woman who is also unaware of her neurodivergence. The actress should be able to portray a range of emotions and connect authentically with the audience through the character’s layered personality.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Participate in initial rehearsals scheduled prior to the reading.
  • Perform a table reading of the play, “WINNERS,” adhering closely to the script and director’s guidance.
  • Collaborate with the production team and other cast members to refine character portrayal and script delivery.
  • Provide feedback and participate in post-reading discussions if necessary.

Requirements:

  • Must identify with the specified characteristics (age, gender, Jewish heritage, neurodivergence) of the roles as these are crucial for authentic representation.
  • Previous acting experience in theater, film, or television preferred.
  • Must be available for the reading on the specified date and time in midtown New York City.
  • Local to NYC or able to travel to NYC for the event (travel expenses will be reimbursed for local travel).

Compensation:

  • This is a non-union project with compensation provided as a flat fee for participation.

Casting Call: NYC-Based Actor for Equity Showcase Production

About the Production:
“Marianas Trench” is a contemporary play by Scott C. Sickles that explores themes of identity, love, and resilience through the eyes of Teddy Passanante, a mixed Korean/White 11-year-old boy navigating the challenges of growing up gay in a world that doesn’t always understand him. This Equity showcase production offers a compelling narrative filled with emotional depth and complexity.

Role Description:

Teddy Passanante is a bright, verbally sharp, and unathletic boy who is defiantly proud of his identity. Facing bullying at school and feeling misunderstood by his parents, Teddy finds solace and understanding in his relationships with his Korean grandfather and his pen-pal, Anzor, with whom he is falling in love. The role demands a strong emotional range and the ability to convey deep feelings and thoughts with subtlety and authenticity.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Portray the character of Teddy Passanante with emotional depth and authenticity.
  • Attend all scheduled rehearsals and performances.
  • Collaborate with the director and cast members to bring the character and play to life.
  • Participate in promotional activities related to the production as required.

Requirements:

  • Must be NYC-based.
  • Male actor, capable of playing an 11-year-old boy.
  • Mixed East Asian heritage (Korean/White) to authentically represent the character’s background.
  • Strong acting skills, especially in delivering monologues. Classical training and experience in contemporary plays are highly regarded.
  • Ability to portray a wide range of emotions and to connect with audiences on a personal level.
  • Good teamwork and communication skills to work effectively with the cast and crew.

Compensation Details:

  • The selected actor will receive a stipend of $1000 for their participation in the production.
  • This is an Equity showcase, so both Equity and Non-Equity actors are encouraged to apply.
